Permanent exhibition at the Museum der Stille

Opening Hours

Saturday and Sunday: 2 PM - 7 PM

Linienstraße 154A, D-10115 Berlin

Nikolai Makarov's latest installation at the Museum der Stille in Berlin has garnered significant attention since its opening on November 1, 2024. The Gulag Memorial Room is an impressive tribute to the victims of Stalinism and a monument to freedom and democracy.

Unique Atmosphere

The room is entirely lined with recycled peat, creating a unique visual and acoustic experience. The peat walls absorb all sound, fostering an atmosphere of deep silence. The scent of moss, earth, and resin enhances the sensory experience, directly connecting visitors with nature and history.

Symbolic Design

A new painting by Makarov, dark and sacred, hangs on one of the peat walls. The floor, covered with dilapidated linen cloths, emphasizes the stark atmosphere. The use of peat recalls the forced labor in the Gulags and serves as "nature's memory," connecting past and present.

The Gulag Memorial Room is more than just an art installation. It is a place of contemplation, remembrance, and reflection on the importance of freedom and democracy in our present time. Visit the Gulag Memorial Room at the Museum der Stille and experience this unique blend of art, history, and nature for yourself.
