Exhibition permanently in the Museum of Silence
opening hours
Saturday and Sunday: 2-7 pm
Linienstraße 154A, D-10115 Berlin
Nikolai Makarov's latest installation at the Museum of Silence in Berlin has caused a stir since its opening on November 1, 2024. The Gulag Memorial Room is an impressive homage to the victims of Stalinism and a memorial for freedom and democracy.
Unique atmosphere
The room is completely lined with recycled peat, which creates a unique visual and acoustic experience. The peat walls absorb all sound and create an atmosphere of deep silence. The smell of moss, earth and resin enhances the sensory experience and connects visitors directly with nature and history.
Symbolic Design
A new painting by Makarov, gloomy and sacred, hangs on one of the peat walls. The floor, covered with rickety linen cloths, underlines the barren atmosphere. The use of peat recalls forced labor in the gulags and serves as a "memory of nature" that connects the past and the present.
The Gulag Memorial Room is more than just an art installation. It is a place of prayer, remembrance and reflection on the importance of freedom and democracy in our time. Visit the Gulag Memorial Room in the Museum of Silence and experience for yourself this unique combination of art, history and nature.
